What Are Protein Colloids?

Life is a string of complex molecules: polymers. Nature's most abundant protein polymer is collagen, from the Greek meaning "glue producing". Natural adhesives derived from animal protein include glues made from collagen. These natural protein colloids are used as an additive in adhesives and binders. Natural protein adhesives (glues) and binders have a variety of unique features and uses.

Origin

In its natural biologically active status, Collagen (natural protein polymer) is water insoluble, functioning as a strong and flexible binder for skin and bone. The collagen molecule exists as a coiled triple-helix, held in place by chemical bonding between the individual protein chains. When subjected to extremes of temperature or acid or alkaline conditions, the helix "denatures", separating into three straight-chain polypeptides. The polypeptide can then be removed from the native skin and bone, hydrolyzed to the desired molecular weight, and dried or compounded for the intended application.

Natural adhesives derived from animal protein include glues made from collagen, a constituent of the connective tissue and bones of mammal and fish. These natural protein colloids are used as an additive in adhesives and binders. Natural protein adhesives (glues) and binders have a variety of unique features and uses such as adhesive formulation and caulks, animal feed binder and supplements, conventional adhesive uses (tape, book binding, laminating), natural adhesives for paper industry (core winding, sizing, gaskets), textiles, etc. (Markets & Applications)

Adhesion

Colloidal Collagen Protein has a strong specific adhesion for a variety of substrates. Applied from water solution, the colloids gel at room temperature forming quick temporary bonds. Final bonds are formed on drying.

Protective Colloid

Dilute solutions in water act as dispersants or flocculants. This behavior suggests that high molecular weight collagen functions as a “bio-polymer”, with performance characteristics similar to water soluble synthetics.

Unique Properties

IPC Protein Colloids are bio-degradable and re-pulpable polymers. They are also compatible with most water soluble materials. For more detailed information, click on the product information link.
